Build sheet for my 1970 SS 396 El Camino. Yes, it is a true SS.  The only way to tell a true SS on the 1970 is from the build sheet. It must have the "ZL3 SS396 COVERS" option. This car has a sad story. At some point in the past an owner removed the 396  BB and installed a 400 SB. If you page through these pictures you will find that I am trying to fix that travesty.

Start of the fun? Today the new engine arrived. A 454 Mark 4 build to LS-6 specs.
Guess I have lots of parts to find an buy. Lets get it unwrapped.
Well I have some of the parts. Quite frankly at this point I did not realize how may more parts were going to be needed to complete the project.
We are in the process of moving the engine to it's new home. As you can see I am getting lots of help from good freinds.
In it's new home where it actually ended up staying for close to a year.
Well the SB has been sold and it is time to remove it. How does the old saying go, oh yes, there is no replacement for displacement.
The SB is gone! Boy that engine compartment is ugly. Maybe I will just spend a few hours to clean it up and spray it up with some spray cans.
Oops, something is missing. What could it be? Did I scrub to hard?
Oh, here is what is missing. It is now in it's new home, on the back porch.
Now we have two vehicles in the same condition. If this keeps up we will not have any left to drive.
One thing always seems to lead to another. Lets see if I take this bolt off I should be able to clean here also.
I really do not understand, Parts just seem to keep coming off. I'm going in the wrong direction.
Hummmm. At one time this was a car. Well at lest I think all the parts are off now.
Didn't I just say I was done taking things off. Is there no end to the disassembling?
See Anne (my wife), i'm actually putting something back on.
Firewall in primer.
Here we go again. I did not like the job I did the first time when I cleaned the frame.
Frame in primer.
Frame now painted in base coat, clear coat.
Firewall painted in base coat, clear coat. The color is the color of the car. The plan is to also paint the inner fender well the same way.
Well it doe not look to bad. I think I'll take a brake.
Finally, some parts have been bolted on.
More parts, grills, wiper arms, firewall gasket, wiper motor
Upper and lower control arms. These will come back to hunt me.
Refinished, spindles, steering knuckles, caliper brackets, and dust shields. I can do this for you. see my GM A-Body Control Arm Page
Springs, shocks, rotors, calipers. It actually feels like I am making some progress. It might actually run again.
Close up, isn't it pretty. To bad no one will ever see it. Maybe I should stop here, Naaaaa
More parts.

Hard to believe nearly a year has gone by
