Step one, take lots of pictures so you can put it back together the way it came apart (and to keep people that look at the web site happy).

 

It is further away from the car now, down in the basement on the work bench to take it apart and see what we have.

 

Here we have an ugly rusted, 30 year mess.

Lets see what the inners look like.
 

Not good. That was what all those strange noises I was hearing was about. Actually it did not make all that much noise. At around 55 MPH I would get a slit vibration. If I let of and then gently accelerated it would go away.

 

Well it is apart. It looks like it is a good thing. Time for new gears, and a dress up of the housing.
